The Practice of Atma Vichara: Journeying Within to Find Your True Self

Self-enquiry, also known as Atma Vichara, is a method of self-discovery and liberation taught by Sri Ramana Maharshi.

The practice involves turning inward and inquiring into the nature of one's own self, with the goal of realizing the unchanging, eternal essence that lies at the core of one's being. Here is a step-by-step guide to the method of self-enquiry

  1. Find a quiet place to sit, preferably in a comfortable and upright posture.
  2. Close your eyes and focus your attention inward, on the sensations within your body.
  3. Begin to inquire into the nature of your own self, asking the question "Who am I?" This question should be directed towards your own sense of self, not towards any external objects or experiences.
  4. As you continue to ask this question, observe any thoughts or emotions that arise and simply watch them without getting caught up in them.
  5. Whenever you become aware of your thoughts, return your focus to the question "Who am I?" and continue to inquire.
  6. Repeat this process for as long as you like, letting go of all thoughts and simply observing the stillness that lies beneath them.
  7. Over time, this practice may lead to a realization of the unchanging essence of your own being, beyond all thoughts and emotions.
  8. Continuously practice self-enquiry and remain alert to the true nature of your own self, even in daily life.
